Destruction of Alla Horska’s Mosaics in Mariupol

Boryviter (Kestrel) Mosaic by Alla Horska, 1967 – Mariupol, Ukraine.
Before and after Russian shelling in July 2022.
In July 2022, Russian shelling in Mariupol obliterated two monumental mosaics by Ukrainian artist Alla Horska: Tree of Life and Boryviter (Kestrel). These works, created in 1967 within the « Ukraine » restaurant by Horska and her team, were emblematic of Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage.
The mosaics, devoid of socialist realism, showcased vibrant colors and dynamic forms, reflecting Horska’s commitment to Ukrainian identity and artistic freedom. Their destruction signifies not just the loss of art but an assault on cultural memory.
Efforts are underway to digitally recreate these mosaics, preserving their legacy for future generations.
